Frequently Asked Questions
What is an HSN code?
HSN stands for Harmonised System of Nomenclature. It is an internationally standardised system for classifying traded goods, developed by the World Customs Organization (WCO). In India, HSN codes are used under GST to identify goods on invoices, e-way bills, and GST returns (GSTR-1). There are over 21,000 HSN codes covering every type of physical good.
What is a SAC code?
SAC stands for Services Accounting Code. It is a classification system developed by India's Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) to categorise services under GST. SAC codes are always 6 digits and start with "99". They must be mentioned on service invoices and in GSTR-1 returns. Examples: 998314 for IT consulting, 9954 for construction services.
Is HSN code mandatory for small businesses?
HSN code requirements depend on your annual turnover. Businesses with turnover up to ₹5 crore are required to mention 4-digit HSN codes on B2B invoices (and it is optional for B2C). Businesses with turnover above ₹5 crore must use 6-digit HSN codes. Exporters must use 8-digit codes. Composition scheme dealers and small B2C sellers below ₹5 crore may be exempt from HSN on retail invoices, but it's best practice to include it always.
What happens if I use the wrong HSN code?
Using an incorrect HSN code can lead to GST notices, demand for differential tax (if the code maps to a higher rate slab), and penalties under Section 122 of the CGST Act. It can also cause e-way bill mismatches, input tax credit (ITC) disputes with your buyers, and GSTR-1 rejection or amendment requirements. Always cross-verify codes with the official GST portal before filing.
How many digits should my HSN code have?
The required number of digits depends on your turnover: 2 digits for taxpayers with turnover up to ₹1.5 crore (chapter level), 4 digits for turnover between ₹1.5 crore and ₹5 crore, 6 digits for turnover above ₹5 crore. Exporters and importers must use 8-digit codes. More digits = more specific classification.
Where do I add the HSN code in Tally Prime?
In Tally Prime, HSN/SAC codes are maintained at the Stock Item or Ledger level. Go to Create/Alter Stock Item → GST Details → set HSN/SAC Code. Once set, the code automatically appears on Tax Invoice printouts and in GSTR-1 data. If you are importing invoices via XML (using our Purchase XML Converter), the HSN code should be pre-set on the stock items in Tally before import.
